A different ending by Juan M. O.
For The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

When the Native Americans invited Matt to go to the west he was surprised and proud of himself. He spent almost two weeks thinking what to do until the answer came to his mind: he decided to stay in Maine waiting for his family. So he prepared some gifts for the baby like a crib, also food for the family.

The Native Americans were proud of Matt because he was doing the things he had to do. When they started the journey to the west Matt was feeling very lonely and scared. He spent four months waiting when he realized that they were never coming back. Matt decided to go to Massachussets on his own so he prepared all his things and he went away.

The Sign of the Beaver is an amazing book for teenagers. Its main characters, Matt and Attean, are teenagers like us! So you will feel a very strong connection.

This book is about these two brave and strong boys, Matt and Attean. Matt is a white boy, who is left alone in a log cabin his family has bought. His father goes to Maine, where he lived before, to look for his mother, who is expecting a baby. The other character, Attean, is an indian who lives peacefully with his family near Matt's log cabin. These two boys generate a very nice relationship, in which they help each other. They experience the most crazy and unimaginable adventures which are going to make you want to read more and more. This relationship without boundaries, without differences is going to make you look at friendship from another perspective.

I totally recommend this book, especially to teenagers. You will learn more about friendship. I, being a teenager, have enjoyed this book a lot. So save some money or ask your parents to buy this excellent book.

The Sign of the Beaver is an amazing book for teenagers! The main characters, Matt and Attean, are teenagers just like us! You will feel a very strong connection with them. Are you brave enough to enter this world?

Now that twelve-year-old Matt and his father have finished building a cabin for their family in the Maine forest, Matt´s father must leave to bring the rest of the family to the new house. Until the day his father returns, Matt must try to survive in the wilderness on his own. Matt is brave, but he´s not prepared for an attack of bees, and he is astonished when he is rescued by an Indian and his grandson, Attean. With time the boys come to know each other, and they have a lot of wonderful adventures together, like coming across a bear, or even questioning the loyalty of some Indian tribes towards the animals that live in the forest. They also learn from each other: while Matt teaches Attean how to read and speak English Attean teaches him how to hunt. The months pass with no sign of Matt´s family. Attean asks Matt to join the Beaver tribe and move north. Should Matt abandon his hopes and go onto a new life? Has his family abandoned him? Will he ever see them again?

I really loved this book and felt very touched with the relationship between Matt and Attean. No matter what you are, a boy or a girl, you will really enjoy the book. I firmly recommend it. So, do you wanna enter this adventure?

Chapter 25: What Happened To My Happy Ending?

Days passed and the snow stopped falling down, as the flowers started growing. Matt marked yet another twig signalizing the end of the month. Matt often questioned this decision of staying behind to wait for his family but brushed it off and distracted himself. Now that it was spring the weather was much warmer and he could go out of his cabin. He practiced with his bow and arrow almost every day. He also invented a protective barrier around his house after another bear attacked him. The next weeks he ate as a king.
“Attean!” Matt called out the dog he named after his best mate. The dog, who had been barking wildly at the road, looked at Matt and then started barking again, louder and wilder. If he hadn’t known Attean JR, he would have been scared. “What is it? Are you all right?” The dog smelled the air and tensed up. Matt approached the place where the dog was giving a deadly glare at, and was surprised when he saw a small chubby man walking up to him. He had never seen him before and the only human company he had had apart from the Indians was Ben, who had ended up robbing him.

“Sorry, sir, but are you Matt Halloway?” The fatly man asked, startling him. Nobody had called him by his surname since he left his last house. He struggled to remember him from the past but those memories were so blurry and seemed so far away …
“Yes, I am. Who are you?” his bluntness seemed to distract this man for a few seconds. When he recovered from the shock he stared at Matt with surprise.
“Don´t you recognize me? I´m Doctor Mongerstern.” And then something clicked inside his mind and realized he was his family´s doctor, whom he had visited since he was born. He felt pretty embarrassed that he hadn´t recognized him, but honestly he hadn´t thought once of him since he met Attean. Neither had he thought of his friends or the people he used to know.
“Oh, yeah, sorry Doctor, but, with no intention to offend you, why are you here?”
As he said this, Matt spotted a hint of empathy in the doctor´s gaze.
“I came to tell you why your family hasn´t come back yet.”
Oh. This was the moment he dreaded. Matt preferred not knowing, so he could just imagine. He always thought of his family being sick, or that something had happened to the baby or something like it. What he had never thought came out of the doctor´s lips. Matt knew it was the most possible one, but he was in denial. It felt as a punch in the gut when those two words were registered by his brain. All colour drained from his face. “They died” He said it just like that, as if they were talking about the weather. Matt lost it.
He was furious with him for just mentioning it like it was nothing. He was enraged with his family because they left him all alone but most of all he was infuriated with himself. They had died and he couldn´t do a thing about it. They had died and he was all alone. He was so innocent. What else could have happened? He felt so naïve.
He knew his anger was just to cover up his sadness. After seeing all red Matt realized it made no sense to be mad. He couldn’t do a thing about it. He then thought of the Indians.
With all the pain in his chest he spat “Leave me alone”, trying to stop the tears that threatened to escape his petrified body until he saw the doctor walk away. Once he was out of sight, he broke down. He fell to the floor. His mind was crashed with a wave of emotion and he couldn´t hold it together. His lips trembled slightly as he tasted his fresh salty tears that leaked from his eyes. No matter how hard he tried to stop the tears that never seemed to cease. Out of the blue he felt something soft brush his hand. When he uncovered his face he saw Attean, his dog, crying and wondering what had happened to his master. He tried to put a straight face but ended up as he was at the beginning, a sobbing mess.
He was slowly running out of tears. After a few minutes he stopped crying as the flashbacks started. As he tried to stop the crystal-like tears from arising again he saw the doctor come back.
“I know this is not what you want to hear right now but I have to take you to the adoption center; grab your things and let´s go.”
Matt went to the cabin and only took with him  his book, Robinson Crusoe.
“C´mon, Attean,” Matt called the dog. The doctor shook his head letting him know he couldn´t take the dog.

He straightened up and put on a brave face. He petted Attean´s head and turned to look for a last time at that house where he had met his soul brother, learnt to be independent, and heard the worst news. Both his families were gone, in different ways but both forever.

for The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

When Matt left Attean, he thought that in a few days his family would return, but he was wrong. His family didn`t appear in a long time. So Matt continued waiting, always with the hope that one day his family would return. Day after day there was another problem, fights with animals, different people and hunters stealing his food…

One day Matt was fishing at the lake to get some fish to eat that night, when suddenly he heard someone saying “Matt, Matt”. He turned around and there they were, his family was on the other side of the lake. Standing there with an enormous smile, his father was holding a wonderful baby. Matt was so, so happy that he swam across the lake to hug his family. All in a sudden he was trapped between his mother’s arms. Then he hugged his father and he asked, “Is he my new brother?” “Yes,” his father said. “Isn`t he wonderful?”

Matt and his family continue living their life; they built another house all together and were always having new adventures.

When Matt and Attean finished killing the bear, Attean asked Matt if he wanted to stay with him. Matt said that he wanted to see his family and the new baby one more time. When time passed Matt decided that his family would never be back again, so he left with Attean.

The tribe moved to the north of America. While they were traveling they heard from some villagers that a family in Maine had had a baby but the baby had died and the mother was so scared that she had abandoned her son Matt in the forest. Matt cried for a day but then he realized that his family was going to be okey.

When they arrived, Attean taught Matt how to build tents. Then both went to explore and they found a big river near the settlement. Attean and Matt were so happy together, they were brothers. One day Matt felt so important in the tribe that he threw Robinson Crusoe into the river.

Weeks later, Matt´s father was drinking in the river when he found Matt’s book that said, “I am okey. Matt.”
Diary Entry by Sofía A. H.
Based on A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park

April 11th

Today I had a rough day. First of all, it was a long trip from the Ambassador’s Palace. Even though I was on boat, it didn’t seem to me as if it took less. Maybe because I was so anxious. I couldn’t wait till I got home! I just needed to tell Min the good news and to tell Crane-Man about my adventure. I would have loved seeing the look on his face when I told him about how I grabbed the shard and took it to the ambassador Kim. He would’ve been so proud of me.

I can’t help but think about what would’ve happened if I hadn’t gone on the trip to the palace. What if I could’ve seen Crane-Man or maybe I could’ve saved him. I think I might be thinking about it too much. It’s just that it was so sudden, I was completely shocked. I didn’t expect it at all.

Anyway, I’m getting a bit depressed. I’ll think about the bright side. Min adopting me was very unexpected. I still can’t believe he’s going to teach me how to use the wheel! I’m FINALLY going to make my own pottery! I’ve been dreaming of this moment! I really hope that I can make some nice pottery and maybe later, I’ll be able to sell them!
